คำกิริยาวิเศษณ์ (Adverbs) ภาษาอังกฤษ

By | September 10, 2014

He ran quickly. (ขยายกิริยา “ran”)
Come here (ขยายกิริยา “come”)
I went to the dentist yesterday. (ขยายกิริยา “went”)
It is very hot today. (ขยายคำคุณศัพท์ “hot”)
Are you quite comfortable? (ขยายคำคุณศัพท์ “Comfortable”)
His work isn’t good enough for a scholarship (ขยายคำคุณศัพท์ “good”)
He plays extremely well. (ขยายคำกิริยาวิเศษณ์ “well”)
She drives too fast. (ขยายคำกิริยาวิเศษณ์ “fast”)

แต่มีคำกิริยาวิเศษณ์บางคำขยายทั้งประโยคได้ เช่น
Fortunately, I remembered in time who he was.
Indeed, I won’t do it.

รูปของกิริยาวิเศษณ์บางคำเป็นคำเดียว (Single Word) เช่น
yet, down, then, too etc.

บางคำประกอบมาจากคำคุณศัพท์โดยการเติม “-ly” เช่น
quickly, clearly, splendidly etc.

บางคำประกอบด้วยคำ 2 คำ ซึ่งเดิมคำ 2 คำนี้ต่างมีหน้าที่คนละอย่าง และเมื่อนำมาประกอบกันแล้วเกิดเป็นความหมายใหม่ขึ้น ซึ่งต่างไปจากความหมายเดิมของแต่ละคำ เช่น
anywhere        มาจาก     any + where
sometimes      มาจาก     some + times
however           มาจาก    how + ever

แต่มีคำกิริยาวิเศษณ์บางคำประกอบด้วย 2 คำ เช่นกัน และเขียนแยกจากกัน แต่ยังคงความหมายเดิมของแต่ละคำไว้ เช่น
next week, this morning, in front, at the side, with pleasure, at first, the day after tomorrow, on the outskirts of the city, not in the least, as a matter of fact ซึ่งคำเหล่านี้ถูกเรียกว่า กิริยาวิเศษณ์รูปวลี (Adverb phrases)

Adverbs ภาษาอังกฤษ

การแบ่งชนิดของกิริยาวิเศษณ์ตามความหมายของมัน
( The Classification of Adverbs according to meaning)
การแบ่งด้วยระบบนี้เราจะยึดความหมายของมันที่สามารถตอบคำถาม “when, where, how” ได้เป็นหลัก (คงจำได้ว่า Question Words “when, where, how” เป็น Adverbs) จึงจำแนกเป็นกลุ่มได้ดังนี้

1. Adverbs ที่แสดงความหมายถึง ”ลักษณะอาการกระทำ” (ตอบคำถาม “how”) เช่น
The little -boy behaved badly.
The bird sang sweetly.
Every soldier fought bravely and well.

Adverbs ที่แสดงความหมายเช่นนี้ เรียกว่า  Adverbs of Manner. Adverbs of Manner ที่ใช้กันบ่อยๆ คือ actively, anyhow,
boldly, calmly, carefully, distinctly, easily, equally, fast, gladly, how, intentionally, late, promptly, quickly, quietly, simply, sin-cerely, still, suddenly, together, willingly, wisely, wrongly, etc.

หมายเหตุ จะสังเกตว่า Adverbs of Manner มักจะสร้างมาจากคำคุณศัพท์ (Adjective) แล้วเติมด้วย “-ly”

2. Adverbs ที่แสดงความหมายถึง “เวลาของการกระทำ”(ตอบคำถาม “when”)  เรียกว่า Adverbs of Time เช่น
The boy said, “I will do the work tomorrow.”
The teacher said, “You will do it now.”
Call me early; I want to see the sunrise.
What’s going to happen next.

Adverbs of time ที่ใช้บ่อยๆ คือ after (wards), already, before, immediately, late (ly), once, presently, shortly, soon, still, today (tomorrow, tonight) when, yesterday, yet

เกี่ยวกับ Adverbs of Time นี้ควรศึกษา Adverbs อีกชนิดหนึ่งควบคู่ไปด้วย คือ Adverbs of Frequency (กิริยาวิเศษณ์บอกความบ่อยครั้ง) ซึ่งมีความหมายเกี่ยวข้องกับเวลาเช่นกัน และเป็น Adverbs ที่ตอบคำถาม “How often” ทั้งยังมีตำแหน่งของคำที่แตกต่างไปจาก Adverbs of Time เช่น
He always does his work well.
She has never done that before.
I have not been to Paris very often.
You will seldom, in fact hardly ever, hear that said.
He is sometimes right.
Adverbs of Frequency อื่นๆ อีก continually, frequently, generally, occasionally, rarely, regularly, scarcely, hardly, ever. และขอให้สังเกตว่า “ever” นั้นมักจะใช้ประกอบด้วยคำ Adverbs เชิงปฏิเสธ เช่น “hardly, scarcely, หรือ not” เช่น
We hardly ever see you now; you are scarcely ever at home.
Don’t ever say that again.

“ever” มักไม่ค่อยใช้ตามลำพัง นอกจากใช้ในประโยคคำถาม หรือประโยคเงื่อนไข เช่น
Do you ever see George now that he has left London?
If you ever see George, give him my kind regards.

3. Adverbs ที่แสดงความหมาย “สถานที่ที่กระทำอาการ” ซึ่งเรียกว่า Adverbs of Race เช่น
I shall stand here.
The child opened the door of the cage and the bird flew out.
I’ve looked everywhere for my new pen.

ความหมายของ Adverbs of Place มักจะครอบคลุมถึง “ความเคลื่อนไหวไปยังจุดหนึ่ง” หรือ “เคลื่อนจากจุดๆ หนึ่ง” หรือ
“การแบ่งแยกจากกัน” เช่น
Come nearer.
They walked slowly past/by.
The sailors went ashore.
He paced to and fro all night.
She draw the curtains apart.
Adverbs of Place ที่ใช้กันบ่อย คือ above, abroad, across, along, around, away, back, below, down, downstairs, in, nowhere, on, somewhere, there, through, together, under, up, upstairs, where.

4. มี Adverbs บางคำที่แสดงความหมาย “ขีดระดับของการกระทำ” ซึ่งเรียกว่า Adverbs of Degree เช่น
This coffee is very bad.
It has been a long journey but we are nearly there now.
Are you quite sure we are on the right road?
That’s all right.
He spoke French too quickly for me to follow him.

ในภาษาพูดมักจะใช้คำเหล่านี้เป็น Adverbs of Degree เช่น
I’m awfully/terribly/frightfully sorry I’m late.

ข้อสังเกต Adverbs of Degree นั้นมักไม่ใช้ขยายคำกิริยา แต่จะนำไปใช้ขยายคำคุณศัพท์ หรือคำกิริยาวิเศษณ์คำอื่น เช่น very good, quite sure, too quickly, nearly there, all right

หมายเหตุ อาจมีบางคำขยายกิริยาได้ เช่น
The shock nearly killed him.    I quite like his picture.

Adverbs of Degree ที่ใช้บ่อยๆ คือ absolutely, completely, deeply (= I’m deeply sorry), distinctly (= this work is dis¬tinctly better.), enormously, entirely, greatly, equally, exactly (= exactly right), extremely, just (= just right), much, partly, perfectly (= perfectly correct), practically, rather, scarcely, slightly, thoroughly, utterly

5. มี Adverbs อยู่ 4 คำที่ใช้สร้างประโยคคำถามได้จึงเรียกว่า Adverbs of Interrogation เช่น
When are you going away?    Why did you say that?
Where are you sending him?    How did you come here?

6. คำ “Yes, certainly, surely, of course, etc” เป็น Adverbs of Affirmation
คำ “parhaps, may be etc” เป็น Adverbs of Probability
คำ “no, not และ never” เป็น Adverbs of Negation

หมายเหตุ
1. “no” อาจใช้เป็น Adjective ได้ด้วย
2. คำ Adverbs ทั้งหลายที่กล่าวในข้อ 6 มักจะใช้เป็นคำแทนประโยคได้โดยเฉพาะในภาษาพูด เช่น
“Do you know Mr. Smith?”    “Yes” (= Yes, I know him)
“Is George there?”  “No” (= No, he isn’t here)
“Will you help me?”  “Certainly” (= Yes, I will help you)
“Do you agree?”   “Oh, quite” (= Oh you, I agree)
“Will you do what he wants?”   “Never!” (= I shall never do what he wants)

3. คำ “Yes” และ “No” อาจใช้แสดงความหมายทั้งเห็นด้วยหรือไม่เห็นด้วยกับผู้พูด แต่ “Yes” สามารถตามด้วยประโยค บอกเล่าเท่านั้น และ “No” ตามด้วยประโยคปฏิเสธเท่านั้น

คำ Adverbs of Affirmation อื่นๆ ที่มักนำมาใช้ ใช้แทนประโยคได้ คือ absolutely, certainly, decidedly, evidently, indeed, entirely, naturally, obviously, precisely, surely, willingly และกิริยาวิเศษณ์รูปวลี เช่น of course, very well

7. Adverbs ที่แสดงความหมาย “บอกปริมาณ หรือ จำนวน” เรียกว่า Adverbs of quantity หรือ Adverbs of Amount and Number เช่น
Henry works very little; not nearly as much as George.
William has won the prize twice; no one else has won it more than once.

8. คำ Adverbs “when, where, why, how” อาจนำไปใช้เป็นคำนำ Clause (ตัวเชื่อมของ Clause) จะเรียกว่า Relative Adverbs เช่น
I remember the day when (= on which) you told me you were going to America.
That is the room where ( = in which) the Rembrandt picture is hung.
I don’t know the reason why (= for which) she did it.
Can you tell me the wav how (= by which) it was made.

การสร้างคำ Adverbs
1. Adverbs of Manner มักสร้างจากคำคุณศัพท์โดยการเติมท้ายด้วย “-ly” เช่น

Adjective Adverb
She is a quick worker. She works quickly.
He is a careful driver. He drives carefully.
They are noisy children. They play noisily.
She gave a merry laugh. She laughed merrily.
He gave a full explanation. He explained the whole thing fully.

หมายเหตุ

He does it in a silly way.
He acted in a fatherly manner.

2. Adverb บางคำใช้รูปแบบเดียวกันกับรูป Adjective เช่น

Adjective Adverb
He has gone to the Far East. We didn’t walk very far.
It is a straight road. It runs straight for miles.
He spoke in a low voice. He speaks low but clearly

หมายเหตุ
คำ “lowly” ใช้เป็น Adj. เท่านั้น แปลว่า “humble”
“The early bird catches the worm.”           She gets up very early.
Take a clean sheet of paper.                          The prisoner got clean away (=completely)
I saw a dead bird in the garden.                   The man was dead drunk.
Have you enough time to do the work?    He didn’t try hard enough.
He went on a long journey.                             I shan’t be long.

Adverb บางคำมี 2 รูป คือ ใช้รูปเดียวกันกับ Adjective และบางครั้งเป็นรูปลงท้ายด้วย “-ly” ซึ่งบางครั้งทำให้มีความหมายแตกต่างกันในระหว่าง 2 คำนั้น

Adjective Adverbs
There is a bright moon tonight. The moon shines bright. (หรือ brightly.)
The goods were very cheap. I bought them cheap, (หรือ cheaply)
I went by a direct route. The goods will be sent direct to you and not to our age

หมายเหตุ
I will return directly คำ “directly”
แปลว่า “ทันที” (= at once)

That is a very high building.    The birds are flying high.
หมายเหตุ

He was highly praised for his work.
“highly” = much (อย่างมากมาย)

Jarnes was late for his lesson.        He came late.

หมายเหตุ I have not heard from him lately.
“lately” = “for some time” (ชั่วเวลาหนึ่ง)

She is a very pretty girl.        The little girl danced very prettily.

หมายเหตุ That is a pretty good picture.

คำ “pretty” ในฐานะ Adverb กรณีนี้ = “fairly” (= ค่อนข้างจะ)

He is not a very near relation.    The time is drawing near for my visit to France.

หมายเหตุ I nearly missed my train.
คำ “nearly” ในฐานะ Adverbs กรณีนี้ = “almost” เกือบจะ)

There is a short way home, through the woods.    The car stopped short only a few inches from where I stood.

หมายเหตุ  He will come shortly.
“shortly” = Adv. แปลว่า “in a short time” (= เร็วๆ นี้)

I didn’t want to waken him; he was in a sound sleep.    He was sleeping sound (หรือ soundly)

หมายเหตุ In the football match Oxford were soundly beaten by Cambridge.
“Soundly” = “decisively” (= อย่างเด็ดขาด)

It was a fair fight.    You must play fair (liltle fairly)

หมายเหตุ He did fairly well in his examination.

“fairly” . “rather” (=ค่อนข้างจะ) ซึ่ง “fairly” จะใช้ในความหมายที่ดีดังเช่นตัวอย่าง แต่ “rather” มักจะใช้ในความหมายที่ไม่ดี เช่น
It is rather hot today.
It was a clear sunny day.    You must clearly understand that this is your last chance

หมายเหตุ Stand clear of the doors of the train.
“Clear” ในที่นี้แปลว่า ••ห่างจากส่วนของประตู”
It was a close afternoon.    Keep close to me. (“close” = ใกล้เข้ามา = nearer)
(“close” ไม่ค่อยมีอากาศ)      The statement ran to twenty closely – written        pages.
(“closely” = ติดต่อกันไป = continually)

He is a firm friend of the family.    If we stand firm, I firmly believe we shall succeed.
(“firm” = มั่นคง = steady)                 “firmly” = แน่นอน = certainly, surely

I want a sharp pencil, (sharp” =แหลม)    Turn sharp right at the cross roads.
The teacher spoke sharply to the boy.
(“sharp” = มุมหัก  “sharply” = อย่างเฉียบขาด)

The hours pass slowly when you can’t sleep.

He was wearing very tight shoes.    Hold tight; the plane is going to dive.
The passengers were tightly packed in the train.
This is a good, wide road.                   The sleepwalker’s eyes were wide open but he didn’t seem to be seeing anything.
The two people differed widely in their outlook.

I think we are on the wrong road.    It was at the cross-roads that we went wrong.
He was wrongly accused of the crime.
Are we on the right road?                    Turn right at the next cross-roads.
(“right” = ถูกต้อง)                                    He was rightly blamed for the accident.
(“right” = ขวามือ “rightly”= อย่างถูกต้อง)

ขอให้สังเกตุไว้ว่า กลุ่มกิริยาแห่งการสัมผัสรับรู้ (Verbs of Perception) ทุกคำจะตามด้วย Adjectives เท่านั้น เพราะเป็นกิริยาเทียบเท่า Verb to Be กลุ่มหนึ่ง จึงห้ามตามด้วย Adverbs เด็ดขาด เช่น
The milk tastes sour.
The rose smells sweet.
The fur feels soft.

ประโยคข้างบน สามารถเขียนใหม่โดยใช้ Verb to Be แทน Verbs of Perception ได้โดยไม่ทำให้ความหมายเปลี่ยนแปลง เช่น
The milk is sour.
The rose is sweet to smell.
The fur is soft to the touch.

มี Adverbs บางคำสร้างมาจาก Nouns โดยการเติมส่วนหน้าคำ (Prefix) หรือช่วยท้ายคำ (Suffix) เพิ่มที่ Nouns นั้น เช่น

1. โดยการเติม Suffix “-ly” เช่น He comes here daily/weekly/monthly/hourly etc.

หมายเหตุ คำเหล่านี้อาจใช้เป็นคำ Adjective ด้วย
The shed was lifted bodily and carried to another part of the garden.

หมายเหตุ “bodily” = in one piece (= เป็นชิ้นเดียว)

2. โดยการเติม Suffix “-ways, -wards, -wise” เช่น
The path was so narrow we had to walk sideways.
He went backwards/forwards/homewards.
He sat with his legs crosswise.

3. โดยการเติม prefix “a-” เช่น ashore, aloft, abroad

การแบ่งชนิดของ Adverbs ตามตำแหน่งที่อยู่ของมัน
(The Classification of Adverbs according to Position)
Adverbs มีที่อยู่ในประโยค 3 ตำแหน่ง ดังนี้
1. อยู่หน้าประโยค (Front-Position)
2. อยู่หน้ากิริยาในประโยค (Mid-Position)
3. อยู่ท้ายประโยค (End-Position)

Adverbs ที่ใช้อยู่หน้าประโยค
(Front-position Adverbs)
1. Adverbs ต่อไปนี้ใช้อยู่หน้าประโยคเท่านั้น
(1.1) Interrogative Adverbs ได้แก่ When, Where, Why, How
When shall I see you again?        Why did you say that?
Where are you going?                    How did you make it?

(1.2) Adverbs of Affirmation และ Adverbs of Negation เช่น
Yes, I know him quite well.          No, that is not correct.

2. Adverbs ที่ใช้ขยายประโยคทั้งประโยคมักจะวางไว้หน้าประโยคแต่ไม่เสมอไปนัก เช่น
Still, in spite of what you say, I don’t think it is true.
Altogether, I don’t think we have done too badly to get $400 for our old car.

จงสังเกตการใช้ Adverbs ในตาราง A และ B ต่อไปนี้ จะเห็นว่า Adverbs ในตาราง A นั้นขยายกิริยาหรือคุณศัพท์ในลักษณะปกติของมัน แต่ Adverbs ในตาราง B จะขยายทั้งประโยค ดังนั้น ความหมายของ Adverbs ในตาราง A และ B จึงแตกต่างกัน

A B
I can’t give you the answer now. Now, this is what happened.
I don’t think he would be so silly. So, you don’t believe what I told you?
He asked for the money so I paid him there and then. There, do you believe me now?
The cat walked quite surely along the narrow wall.           You surely (หรือ Surely, you) won’t pay that price.
She spoke simply and naturally. I couldn’t, naturally (หรือ Naturally, / couldn’t) agree to aproposal like that.
He is fortunately married. He is, fortunately (หรือ Fortunately, he is), marrie

3. ในประโยคอุทาน (Exclamatory Sentences) Adverbs มักจะถูกวางไว้หน้าประโยค เช่น
Away they went!     Here he comes!     There goes Helen!
How well he speaks English!     How quickly time has gone!

จงสังเกตว่าในประโยคอุทานที่ใช้ “how” Adverbs คำอื่นจะต้องติดตามมาอยู่หน้าประโยคเช่นกัน

4. Adverbs บางคำอาจใช้อยู่หน้าประโยคได้ ทั้งๆ ที่ที่อยู่ปกติของมันมิใช่อยู่ตำแหน่งนี้เลย เช่น
Sometimes he sits and thinks, and sometimes he just sits.
Yesterday I went to football match; today I am playing Tennis; tonight I am going to the theatre and tomorrow
I am going swimming.

ประโยคข้างต้นสามารถเขียนตามปกติของมันได้ดังนี้
I went to football match yesterday; I am playing tennis today; I am going to the theatre tonight and I am going swimming tomorrow.

มี Adverbs จำนวนหนึ่งซึ่งมักจะใช้วางไว้หน้าประโยคได้ คือ afterwards, then, there, therefore, anyhow, now, so, soon, once, only, (un) fortunately, luckily, evidently, personally, possibly, suddenly, consequently, usually, naturally, certainly, really, perhaps, surely, indeed, next, occasionally, accordingly, however, first (secondly, thirdly, etc.) originally, yet, eventually
และเป็นกลุ่มวลี (Adverbial Phrases) ก็มี เช่น by and by, up to now, before then, until then, just then, just now, by now, every day, of course, how far/long/much/often, at first/last/present/least, in future, later on, all at once, some day, sooner or later, etc.

Often have I heard it said that he is not to be trusted.
Twice within my lifetime have world wars taken place.
Many a time as a boy have I climed that hill.
Near the church was on old ruined cottage.
By his side sat his faithful dog.
Here is the book that you wanted.
Such was the tale he told me.

2. เมื่อ Adverbs of Negation หรือ Adverbs of Negation เทียบเท่าอยู่หน้าประโยค เช่น
In no circumstances would I agree to such a proposal.

Not until all attempts at negotiation had failed did the men decide to go on strike.
Nowhere else will you find so many happy, contented people.
Not only has he a first-class brain but he is also a tremendously hard worker.
No sooner had they been granted one increase of pay than they asked for another.
Seldom is it wise to disregard the advice that he gives.
Never have I seen her before.

3. เมื่อ “only” วางไว้หน้าประโยค และไม่ได้ขยายเฉพาะประธานของประโยคเท่านั้น เช่น
Only when all attempts at negotiation had failed, did the men decide to go on strike.
Only with the full agreement of everyone can we hope to succeed.
Only in north-west Scotland have I seen such scenery as that.

4. เมื่อ “there” ใช้ในกรณีไม่เน้น (unstressed) และวางอยู่หน้าประโยค (= เมื่อ There + Be = มี) เช่น
There is no doubt that the man is guilty.
There’s a letter for you on your desk.
There was a frost last night, wasn’t there?
There are many people still with too low a standard of living.

5. เมื่อ “there” และ “here” ใช้ในลักษณะเน้น (Stressed) ในประโยคอุทานของประโยค เช่น
I heard a knock at the door and there was George.
Here comes George!

Adverbs ใช้อยู่หน้ากิริยาในประโยค
(Mid-Position Adverbs)
Adverbs ที่ใช้หน้ากิริยาในประโยคกลุ่มสำคัญ คือ Adverbs of Frequency เช่น almost, nearly, quite, hardly, just, often, frequently, occasionally, rarely, scarcely, never, generally, continually ที่อยู่ของมันจะอยู่หน้ากิริยาในประโยคเสมอ เช่น
I always sleep with my window open.     I almost forgot to tell you this.
He never forgets his wife’s birthday.      I hardly know how to thank you.
We often wish that you lived near us.    He just picked up his hat and walked away.

แต่ถ้าในประโยคนั้นมีกิริยาช่วย (Helping Verbs หรือ Auxiliary Verbs) อยู่ Adverbs of Frequency จะต้องวางไว้หลังกิริยาช่วยนั้นๆ เช่น
Henry’s work is always carefully done.
Richard was never a very good footballer.
You should never make that mistake again.
They are just leaving the house.
The baby can nearly walk.

อย่างไรก็ดี ถ้ากิริยาช่วยนั้นถูกใช้ในลักษณะเน้น Adverbs of Frequency ต้องวางไว้หน้ากิริยาช่วย เช่น
“Henry’s work seems carefully done”   “It always is carefully done.”
“Richard isn’t a very good footballer now.”
“He never was a good footballer.”

ประโยคดังกล่าวนี้ ในภาษาพูดมักจะเป็นคำตอบสั้นๆ (Short Answer) เช่น
“Henry’s work seems carefully done”
“It always is.”
“Richard isn’t a good footballer.”
“He never was.”
“Can you get a good lunch on the train?”
“You sometimes can.”

ตัวอย่างของการใช้ Mid-Position Adverbs คำอื่นๆ เช่น
I accidentally upset the water jug.
He actually told me it wasn’t my business.
They anxiously awaited the result.
The soldiers bravely attacked the strong position.
He definitely refused to do the job.
I deeply regret having spoken.
I distinctly heard him say that.
(ความหมายจะต่างจาก I heard distinctly what he said)
When the order was given they immediately sprang to his feet.
I almost made that same mistake again.
He just opened the door and walked in.
He then told me what he wanted.
They indeed surprised me very much.
He last wrote to me a year ago.
I now come to a very important matter.
Having bought this land, he next proceeded to plant it with apple trees.
They perhaps disliked what you said.
I rather hoped that you would come to live near us.
I really think that you are expecting too much.
You once said that you had played football for England.
He already knows what I think about him.
I nearly missed my train this morning.
He quite realizes that you can’t help everyone.

Adverbs ทุกคำในประโยคข้างต้น ต้องวางไว้หลังกิริยาช่วย ถ้าประโยคนั้นประกอบด้วยกิริยาช่วยในการสร้างประโยค เช่น
I have accidentally upset the water jug.
They are anxiously awaiting the result.
He will definitely refuse the job.
I had almost made the same mistake again.
I shall now come to an important matter.
He has already heard what I think about him.
He will quite realize that you can’t help everyone.

Adverbs ที่อยู่ท้ายประโยค
(End-Position Adverbs)
1. การใช้ Adverbs ในลักษณะอยู่ท้ายประโยคนั้น เป็นเรื่องปกติที่สุดของการใช้ Adverbs ทีเดียว เพราะ Adverbs ส่วนใหญ่จะมีที่อยู่ที่ท้ายประโยค และในกรณีที่มี Adverbs อยู่ท้ายประโยคหลายคำ มักจะวางเป็นระเบียบ ดังนี้
Adv. of Manner – Adv. of Place-Adv. of time เช่น
Harry worked well here yesterday.

โครงสร้างพื้นฐานของประโยค คือ S + V + (O) or (C) + Adv. นั่นหมายความว่าจะไม่วาง Adverbs ลงระหว่างกิริยา (Verbs) กับกรรม (Objects) หรือส่วนสมบูรณ์ (Complement) เช่น ประโยคเดิม คือ Mary sang that song.
และเราต้องการใส่คำ “beautifully” ลงไปขยายประโยคนี้ เราต้องวางคำ ดังนี้
Mary sang that song beautifully. ห้ามวางคำดังนี้
Mary sang beautifully that song.

ฉะนั้น Adverbs จะต้องวางไว้หลังกรรมหรือส่วนสมบูรณ์เสมอ เช่น
Henry does his work well; Richard generally does his work badly.
George works hard.
Robert drives fast; William drives slowly.
Peggy splayed the accompaniment to Mary’s Song Perfectly.
They flew to Paris yesterday; they hope to visit Lucille tomorrow.
I like learning English very much.
Have you been learning English long?

หมายเหตุ ถ้าใช้รูป Passive Voice อาจวาง Adverbs ไว้หลังกิริยาช่วยได้ เช่น Peggy’s accompaniment was perfectly played.

2.  Adverbs of Negation เช่น “not, hardly, scarcely, never” และ Adverbs of Degree เช่น very, too, quite, just, almost etc. จะไม่วางไว้ท้ายประโยคเลย มีอยู่โอกาสเดียวเท่านั้นที่ Adverbs ดังกล่าวจะอยู่ท้ายประโยคได้ในกรณีที่ใช้ในลักษณะสำนวน (Idioms) เช่น
Turn off the gas: Help me to lift up the table. ซึ่งสามารถใช้ได้อีกแบบหนึ่ง ดังนี้ Turn the gas off. Help me to lift I the table up.

ขอให้สังเกตว่าถ้ากรรม (Objects) เป็นคำสรรพนาม (Pronoun) ต้องวาง Adverbs ไว้ท้ายประโยคเสมอ เช่น
Turn it off. ไม่ใช่ Turn off it.
Lift it up. ไม่ใช่ Lift up it.

3. ถ้าประโยคไม่มีกรรมตรง (Direct Objects) Adverbs จะต้องวางไว้หลังคำกิริยา (Verbs) เช่น
Mr. Owen died yesterday at the age of 85.
The boys have gone there to play tennis.

4. ถ้ากรรม (Object) เป็นรูป Clause คำ Adverbs จะต้องวางไว้หน้า Clause เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงความคลุมเครือทางความหมาย (Ambi¬guity) เช่น He told me yesterday what George said.
ซึ่งจะมีความหมายต่างจาก
He told me what George said yesterday.

เราจะสังเกตว่า Adverbs ที่ระบุเวลาแน่นอน เช่นYesterday, Today, Tomorrow และ Adverbial Phrases เช่น on Wednesday, next Christmas, in a few minutes, etc. มักจะวางไว้ท้ายประโยค แต่ถ้าต้องการเน้นเวลาของการกระทำ Adverbs เหล่านี้จะวางไว้หน้าประโยค เช่น
-Today I have worked indoors, but tomorrow
I shall have a day in the garden.
-Very soon we shall get the result of your examination.
Every now and then a little boat come into the harbour.

6. ถ้ามี Adverbs of time มากกว่า 2 คำขึ้นไปในประโยคจะต้องวาง Adverbs ที่มีความหมายละเอียดชัดเจนมากกว่าก่อนแล้วจึงวาง Adverbs ที่มีความหมายกว้างๆ ต่อไป เช่น
The next meeting will be on Thursday, March 26th, 1960.

7. Adverbs of Degree หรือ Adverbs of Manner มักจะวางไว้หน้าคำ Adjectives หน้าคำ Participles และคำ Adverbs อื่นๆ เช่น
He was extremely clever.
You can’t be too careful.
He played very well.
The glass was badly broken.
The dangerously wounded soldier was immediately hurried to hospital.
She is a really well-educated girl.
You spoke too soon.

8. แต่คำ Adverb “enough” วางไว้หลังคำ Adjective และคำ Participle เช่น
That is good enough for me.
His speech is interesting enough for me to hear.

9. คำ Adverbs บางคำ เช่น “only, sometimes, then, even, perhaps” สามารถวางไว้ในหลายตำแหน่งของประโยค ซึ่งบางครั้ง อาจทำให้มีความหมายแตกต่างกันออกไป เช่น
Sometimes I am quite hopeful about the situation.
I am sometimes quite hopeful about the situation.
I am quite hopeful about the situation sometimes.
Then I went home.
I then went home.
I went home then.
Perhaps I was mistaken.
I was, perhaps, mistaken.
I was mistaken, perhaps.

คำ “only” สามารถวางไว้หน้าคำได้ทุกคำที่มันขยาย ตั้งแต่ต้นประโยคจนถึงท้ายประโยค และทำให้ความหมายแตกต่างกันไป เพราะมันเป็นทั้งคำคุณศัพท์และคำกิริยาวิเศษณ์ เช่น
Only John admires his brother.
John only admires his brother.
John admires only his brother.
John admires his only brother.
John admires his brother only.

ต่อไปนี้คือกลุ่มของ Adverbs และ Adverbial Phrases ที่สามารถวางได้ทั้งหน้าประโยค กลางประโยค และท้ายประโยค (un) fortunately, especially, possibly, really, certainly, exactly, merely, mostly, simply, anyhow, about, however, indeed, altogether, not, no doubt, of course, at least, at once

การใช้ Adverbs ในลักษณะการเปรียบเทียบ
(Comparison of Adverbs)
การเปรียบเทียบ Adverbs นั้นก็เหมือนกับการเปรียบเทียบคุณศัพท์ดังได้กล่าวมาแล้ว คือ
1. Adverbs ที่เป็นคำพยางค์เดียว เติมท้ายด้วย -er เพื่อแสดงขั้นกว่า (Comparative Degree) และเติม -est เพื่อแสดงขั้นสูงสุด (Superlative Degree) เช่น
near – nearer – nearest
hard – harder – hardest
soon – sooner – soonest

หมายเหตุ คำ “early” และ “often” ใช้กฎเกณฑ์ดังกล่าว เช่นกัน แต่ “often” ใช้ “more” และ “most” เติมข้างหน้าได้ด้วย

2. Adverbs มากกว่า 2 พยางค์ขึ้นไป เติมข้างหน้าด้วย more – เพื่อแสดงขั้นกว่า (Comparative Degree) และเติมหน้าด้วย most- เพื่อแสดงขั้นสูงสุด (Superlative Degree) เช่น brightly – more brightly – most brightly

3. มี Adverbs บางคำที่มีรูปขั้นกว่าและขั้นสูงสุดเฉพาะ เช่น
well – better – best
little – less – least
much – more – most
badly – worse – worst

มี Adverbs หลายคำที่ไม่มีรูปเปรียบเทียบ เช่น here, there, now, then, once, very, etc.
รูปเปรียบเทียบของ “in, out, up” (เช่น inner, outer, upper) ใช้เป็นคำคุณศัพท์เท่านั้น เช่น
The outer door was wide open but the inner one was locked.
His room was on an upper floor of the house.
The House of Lords is known as the Upper Chamber, the House of Common as the Lower Chamber.

ข้อสังเกตเกี่ยวกับการใช้ Adverbs บางคำ
“Quite”
“Quite” มีความหมายแตกต่างกันอยู่ 2 ความหมาย คือ
1. The football ground was quite full; you couldn’t get another person in it. (quite = completely)

2. As a pianist Peter is quite good. He is quite a good pianist but, of course, he is not in the same class as the great concert pianists (quite = fairly)

หมายเหตุ “quite” ในความหมายที่ 1 จะมีเสียงเน้นหนัก (stress) และคำคุณศัพท์ก็มีเสียงเน้นหนักด้วย แต่ในความหมายที่ 2    “quite” มีเสียงเน้นหนัก แต่คำคุณศัพท์ไม่มีเสียงเน้นหนัก

“already, yet”
“already” มีความหมายเท่ากับ “before now,” “up to now,” “by this time”, “so far” เช่น
I have already explained this.
Richard has already eaten six cakes and is starting on the seventh.

“yet” มีความหมายใกล้เคียงกับ “up to now”, “at this moment” เช่น He hasn’t finished his work yet.
Has the postman come yet?
Have you heard from your brother yet?

ความแตกต่างในการใช้ของทั้ง 2 คำก็คือว่า “already” ใช้ในประโยคบอกเล่า “yet” มันจะใช้ในประโยคปฏิเสธและประโยคคำถาม แต่ “already” สามารถใช้ในประโยคคำถามก็ได้ ถ้าผู้ถามต้องการคำตอบ “yes” เช่น
“I didn’t expect you till four o’clock. Is it four o’clock already?”
“What! have you finished your work already?”

หมายเหตุ อย่าสับสนคำ “already” กับคำ “all ready” “all ready” ใช้เป็นคุณศัพท์ เช่น
We are all ready now for the lesson.

ทั้งคำ “already” และ “yet” แสดงความหมายเกี่ยวกับช่วงของเวลาซึ่งเริ่มต้นในอดีตและมีผลกระทบถึงเวลาในปัจจุบัน ฉะนั้น ทั้ง 2 คำจึงมักจะใช้ใน Perfect Tense

อย่างไรก็ดีทั้ง 2 คำอาจใช้ใน Present Simple Tense กับ Verb to Be หรือใน Continuous Tense ก็ได้ เช่น

Is Henry here yet? (= Has he come yet?)
You certainly haven’t time to change your dress; we are late for the party already.
When I got there he was already speaking.

ทั้ง 2 คำอาจใช้ใน Past Tense กับคำกิริยาซึ่งใช้ใน Continuous Tense ไม่ได้ (ดูการใช้ Continuous Tense ประกอบ) เช่น know, understand, believe, think, feel, etc. เช่น
I already knew that.

“Still”
“Still” มีความหมายเท่ากับ “up to the present moment” เช่น
The money is still here if you want it Are you still living in Hampstead?

จะสังเกตเห็นว่า “still” มักจะใช้กับ Present Tense หรือ Continuous Tense แต่ไม่ใช้กับ Past Tense หรือ Perfect Tense บางครั้ง “still” และ “yet” มีความหมายเหมือนกัน เช่น
1. I have still a few more pages to read. = I’ve a few more pages to read yet.
2. “Isn’t William here yet?” = “Is William still not here?”

หมายเหตุ ในตัวอย่างที่ 2 ผู้พูดหวังจะได้พบ William แต่ก็ต้องประหลาดใจและรู้สึกรำคาญใจที่เขายังไม่มา และการแสดงออกในรูปการใช้ “still” ดูจะรุนแรงมากกว่าประโยคที่ใช้ “yet”    .    I

จงสังเกตความแตกต่างทางความหมายของประโยคทั้ง 2 ต่อไปนี้
1. “Is William still here?” และ
2. Is William here yet?

You must work harder yet.     We have exported a lot of goods but we must export more yet.

You must work still harder.     We have exported a lot of goods but we must export still more.

เมื่อ “still” ใช้ในประโยคคำถาม มักจะแสดงความรู้สึกอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งใน 2 ประการนี้ คือ แสดงความรู้สึกประหลาดใจ หรือไม่ก็ไม่พอใจ เช่น
What! are you still working?     I thought you had gone home.
Is that fellow still here?         I wish he’d go away.

“ago”
คำ “ago” ใช้เป็นคำบอกช่วงเวลาจากปัจจุบันไปถึงจุดเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต เช่น
He was here a few minutes ago.
They came to London about three years ago.
ข้อสังเกต “ago” จะใช้กับ Past Simple Tense เสมอ

“too”
“too” ใช้ใน 2 ความหมาย ดังนี้
1. ในความหมายเท่ากับ “also, in addition” เช่น
Fred is coming to the party; won’t you come, too?
If you are taking your suit to be cleaned, will you take mine, too?

การใช้ “too” ในลักษณะนี้ต้องวาง “too” ไว้ท้ายประโยคเสมอ

2. ในความหมายเท่ากับ “excessive”, “more than necessary or desirable” (เป็น Adverb of Degree) ซึ่งความหมายเช่นนี้ มีลักษณะเป็นเชิงปฏิเสธนั่นเอง เช่น
The coffee is too hot. (….. so I can’t drink it.)
This exercise is too hard. (….so I can’t do it.)
He ran away too fast. (….. so I couldn’t catch him)

และความหมายเชิงปฏิเสธเช่นนี้สามารถแสดงด้วยรูป Infinitive ได้ เช่น The coffee is too hot to drink.
This exercise is too hard to do.
He ran away too fast to be caught.
ด้วยเหตุนี้ “too” จะแทนคำ “very” ไม่ได้ ทั้งๆ ที่มีความหมายใกล้เคียงกันมาก แต่ “too” มักจะใช้ในความหมายที่ไม่ดี แต่ “very” จะใช้ในความหมายที่ดี เช่น
I am very happy เป็นต้น

“but”
“but” ถ้าใช้เป็น Adverbs จะมีความหมายเท่ากับ “only” เช่น
He is but a child
There is but one chance left.
We can but try

รูป Adverb Phrase ของ “but” คือ “all but” มีความหมายเท่ากับ “nearly” เช่น He was all but killed.
