Proper Nouns คือ คำนามแบบเฉพาะเจาะจง ซึ่งใช้ในการเรียกชื่อคน สถานที่ องค์กร ตำแหน่ง และสิ่งต่าง ๆ ซึ่งมีลักษณะเฉพาะเจาะจงจำแนกได้ชัดเจน เพื่อให้เข้าใจได้ง่าย ลองดูการเปรียบเทียบระหว่าง Common Nouns และ Proper Nouns

จะเห็นได้ว่า Commons Nouns จะเป็นคำนามที่มีความหมายกว้างกว่า Proper Nouns ซึ่งเป็นชื่อเฉพาะของคน สัตว์ และสิ่งต่าง ๆ
หลักการใช้ Proper Nouns
– ขึ้นต้นด้วยอักษรตัวใหญ่เสมอ ตัวอย่างเช่น
They like John. (จะไม่เขียนว่า They like john. )
I live in England.
She works for Sony.
The last day in January is a Monday.
Proper Nouns ที่ไม่มี The
– จะไม่มีการใช้ The กับชื่อ นามสกุล ของบุคคล
– โดยทั่วไปจะไม่ใช้ The นำหน้าชื่อบริษัท เช่น General Motors, Air France, British Airways

เว้นเสียแต่ว่าชื่อจดทะเบียนของบริษัทเหล่านั้นขึ้นต้นด้วย The เช่น The Post Publishing Public Co., Ltd กรณีนี้บริษัทไปจดชื่อขึ้นต้นด้วย The เอง จึงใช้ The นำหน้า พูดง่าย ๆ คือ The เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชื่อบริษัท
– โดยทั่วไปจะไม่ใช้ The นำหน้าชื่อสถานที่ เช่น

โดยทั่วไปชื่อตำแหน่งจะขึ้นต้นด้วย the แต่ถ้ามีชื่อบุคคลตามหลังตำแหน่งจะไม่ใช้ the
