สอนหลักการใช้ คำคุณศัพท์ (Adjectives) ภาษาอังกฤษ

By | December 24, 2014

“The big house” (=บ้านหลังเล็กจะถูกตัดออกไป)
“The big new house” (= บ้านหลังเล็กและเก่าจะถูกตัดออกไป)
“The big, new, white house” (= บ้านหลังเล็กและเก่าและทาสีอื่นๆ จะถูกตัดออกไป)

การใช้คุณศัพท์อาจวางคำได้ใน 2 ลักษณะ ดังนี้
1. วางไว้หน้าคำนาม (Attributive Use)
2. วางไว้หลัง Verb to BE หรือกิริยาเทียบเท่า Verb to BE (Predicative Use) เช่น
Henry is an honest, hardworking boy.
Mr.Brown has just bought a new, powerful and very expensive car.

หมายเหตุ 2 ตัวอย่างข้างต้นเป็นการใช้แบบ Attributive เพราะวางไว้หน้าคำนามที่มันขยาย
จงสังเกตประโยคต่อไปนี้
That is a new house.
ซึ่งเขียนด้วยวิธีการแบบ Attributive แต่เขียนได้อีกอย่างหนึ่ง คือ
That house is new.

Verb to BE

ขอให้สังเกตว่า เมื่อใช้ในประโยคคำถาม ซึ่งต้องย้ายเอา Verb to BE ไปไว้หน้าประธาน คำคุณศัพท์จะวางไว้หลังคำนาม เช่น
Is the house new?    Isn’t Miss Jackson pretty?
Was the car expensive?    Aren’t these peaches delicious?

(Adjectives Functioning as Nouns)
The blind are taught trades at St. Dunstan’s to fit them for work in the world.

Nurses are required to look after the sick and wounded, the old and infirm.

Fortune favours ‘the’ brave.

ในทำนองเดียวกัน เราอาจพูดว่า “The English, the Irish, The French, The Dutch etc. แต่คำนามลักษณะนี้บางคำต้องเขียนเป็นรูปพหูพจน์ เช่น The Germans, The Italians, The Americans, The Indians etc.

บางครั้งคำนามประเภทนี้อาจใช้กับกิริยาเอกพจน์ เมื่อไม่มีความหมายเป็นบุคคล (People) แต่มีความหมายเป็นนามธรรม (Abstract Noun) เช่น

The good in him outweighs the bad.
He thought that the aim of philosoply was to discover the good, the beautiful and the true.

คำนามถูกใช้ทำหน้าที่เหมือนคุณศัพท์
(Nouns Functioning as Adjectives)
ได้ศึกษาเรื่องนามผสม (Compound Nouns) และได้ให้ข้อสังเกตไว้แล้วว่า นามผสม (Compound Nouns) นั้นแตกต่างจากเรื่อง “กลุ่มคำ” (Word groups) คือ Compound Nouns นั้นจะมีเสียงเน้นหนัก (stress) ที่คำแรกเท่านั้น ส่วน Word Groups นั้นจะมีเสียงเน้นหนักทั้ง 2 คำ

อย่างไรก็ดี คำนามที่อยู่ข้างหน้าของคำทั้ง 2 ลักษณะต่างก็ทำหน้าที่เป็นคุณศัพท์ทั้งสิ้น โดยมีนามคำหลังเป็นคำหลัก (headword) เช่น a stone wall, a leather belt, a gold watch, a silver wedding, a turkey carpet, the University, football match, a corner seat, a garden table, rubber gloves a cotton frock, lawn tennis, a London policeman, a Shakespeare play, rice pudding, The Loch Ness monster.

Material Nouns บางคำมีรูปคุณศัพท์อีกรูปหนึ่ง เช่น
wood – wooden, silver – silvery, gold – golden flax – flaxen,
brass – brazen, wool – woollen silk – silken

จงสังเกตว่า เราจะใช้คุณศัพท์ของมันเมื่อเราใช้ในความหมายบอกรูปร่างลักษณะ เช่น golden corn/hair/sunset

silvery hair, a silken voice, flaxen curls, brazen impudence

บางครั้งคำที่ลงท้ายด้วย “-en” มีความหมาย “ทำด้วยสิ่งนั้น” (=made of) ลองเปรียบเทียบคำ 2 คู่นี้
“a wool merchant” = ผู้ค้าค้าขนสัตว์
“woollen socks” = ถุงเท้าทำด้วยขนสัตว์
“wood fire”    = ไฟป่า
“wooden box” = กล่องทำด้วยไม้

การสร้างรูปคุณศัพท์จากคำนาม
(The Formation of Adjectives from Nouns)
นอกจากมีคำคุณศัพท์รูปเฉพาะคำแล้ว ยังมีการสร้างคำคุณศัพท์จากคำนามได้อีก โดยการเติม “ปัจจัย” (Suffix) ต่อไปนี้ลงที่ท้ายคำนาม
-y, -ly, -ful, -less, -en, -ous, -able, -some, -ic, -ed, -like, -al, -an, -ian, -ical,    -ish

Noun Adjective    Noun Adjective
storm stormy good nature good natured
friend friendly child childlike
harm harmful god godlike
care careful brute brutal
wood wooden education educational
danger dangerous America American
fame famous republic republican
honour honourable Shakspeare Shakepearian
trouble Trouble some Edward Edwardia
quarrel quarrelsome history historic (all)
Iceland Icelandic economy economic (all)
atom atomic Turk Turkish
talent talented girl girlish

การใช้ Participle เป็นคุณศัพท์
คงจำได้ว่า Participle นั้น คือ Non-finite Verbs ชนิดหนึ่งมี 2 รูป คือ 1. Present Participle (Ving) 2. Past Participle (V3) ใช้ทำหน้าที่เป็นคุณศัพท์ได้ทั้งในลักษณะ Attributive และ Predicative และใ”ร’ Adverb ขยายได้ตามปกติเหมือนกับ คุณศัพท์ทั่วๆ ไป ทั้งยังมีรูปการเปรียบเทียบโดยการใช้ “more” วางไว้หน้าแสดงความหมาย “ขั้นกว่า” และ “most” แสดง “ขั้นสูงสุด” เช่น

He told a very amusing story.

Henry is a more promising pupil than Richard, but John is the most promising of them all.

This book is very interesting.

There were a lot of broken bottles on the road.

A confused mob stormed the Government buildings.

She was very tired.

การสร้างรูปปฏิเสธของคุณศัพท์และกิริยาวิเศษณ์
รูปปฏิเสธของคำคุณศัพท์และกิริยาวิเศษณ์มักจะสร้างโดยการเติมอุปสรรคและปัจจัย (Prefix and Suffix) เข้าที่ข้างหน้าหรือข้างท้ายของคำคุณศัพท์ หรือกิริยาวิเศษณ์เชิงบอกเล่า
un – เช่น unhappy, unfortunate (ly), unpleasant (ly)
in – เช่น inaccurate, inartistic, inattentive
im – เช่น impossible, imperfect, immodest
ir – เช่น irresponsible, irregular, irresolute
il – เช่น illegal, illiterate, illegitimate
dis – เช่น disagreeable, disrespectful, dishonest
-less (เติมที่คำนาม) เช่น helpless, hopeless, useless, valueless, parentless

คุณศัพท์บอกลักษณะ
(Descriptive Adjective)
จะสังเกตเห็นจากตัวอย่างต่างๆ ว่า คุณศัพท์ที่ทำหน้าที่อย่างคุณศัพท์ที่สุด ก็คือ “คุณศัพท์บอกลักษณะ” (Descriptive Adjective) เป็นคำที่ให้รายละเอียดแก่คำนามมากที่สุด ซึ่งแบ่งออกเป็น 6 ลักษณะ ดังนี้
1. บอกคุณภาพหรือลักษณะ (quality or character) : good, pretty, careful etc.
2. บอกขนาด (Size): little, long, big, tall etc.
3. บอกอายุ หรืออุณหภูมิ (Age or temperature) new, young, hot, warm etc.
4. บอกรูปร่าง (shape) : round, narrow, square etc.
5. บอกสี (Colour) red, pink, green etc.

(Numeral Adjective)
คุณศัพท์ชนิดนี้มีประโยชน์มากอีกชนิดหนึ่ง เพราะใช้กันมากเช่นกัน จะพบว่าในชีวิตประจำวันเรามักจะต้องยุ่งเกี่ยวกับตัวเลข (number) เสมอ คุณศัพท์ชนิดนี้แบ่งออกเป็น 2 รูป ดังนี้

1. Cardinal Number (จำนานเลขนับตามปกติ) เช่น one, two, three, four, five etc.
2. Ordinal Number (จำนานเลขบอกลำดับที่) เช่น first, second, third, fourth fifth etc.

Cardinal Number

1. จำนวนเลขหลักที่จะต้องจำ คือ one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen twenty; thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety; hundred, thousand, million billion

2. ตั้งแต่ 21 (twenty-one) จะใช้การเขียนรูปผสม twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-nine, thirty etc. และจะใช้ Hyphen (-) คั่นจำนวนทั้ง 2 เสมอ
หมายเหตุ ในภาษาอเมริกัน อาจไม่ต้องใช้ Hyphen คั่น

3. จำนวนเลขหลักร้อย (hundred) จะใช้ “and” เชื่อมจำนวนหลักสิบ หรือหลักหน่วยด้วย เช่น
101 = one hundred and one
121 = one hundred and twenty-one
1,256 = one thousand two hundred and fifty-six

หมายเหตุ ในภาษาอเมริกัน ไม่ต้องมี “and” ก็ได้

4. จำนวนเลขหลักหมื่น และหลักแสน ไม่มีในภาษาอังกฤษ จึงต้องนำหลักสูงสุดขณะนี้ คือ หลักพัน (thousand) มาช่วย ดังนี้
10,000 = ten thousand
100,000 = one hundred thousand
ฉะนั้น 745,643 = seven hundred and forty-five
thousand six hundred and forty-three

หมายเหตุ จำนวนแสน จะมีเลขครบหลักร้อยอีกชุดหนึ่ง จึงใช้ “and” เชื่อมอีก แต่ในภาษาอเมริกันละไปเช่นกัน

5. จำนวนล้าน มีหลักอยู่จึงใช้ได้เลย
8,465,234 = eight million four hundred and sixty-five thousand two hundred and thirty-four

6. “billion” ในภาษาอังกฤษ = จำนวนล้านล้าน
แต่ในภาษาอเมริกัน = จำนวนพันล้าน

ข้อสังเกต จำนวนหลักต่างๆ (hundred, thousand, million) จะไม่มีรูปพหูพจน์เลย

ส่วนตัวเลข Ordinal Number นั้น มีวิธีสร้างดังนี้ :-
(1) ต้องจำตัวเลขหลัก เช่น first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, nineth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, thirtieth, fortieth, fiftieth, etc; hundredth, thousandth

21 = twenty-first twenty-second
etc.

ประโยชน์ที่ได้รับจากจำนวนเลขทั้ง 2 นี้ อาจนำไปใช้เขียนเลขเศษส่วน หรือเลขทศนิยมทางคณิตศาสตร์ เช่น
½ , 5/7, 9/11, 48.5006, 1.0024

เลขเศษส่วนใช้วิธีดังนี้
1. อ่านเลขเศษ ด้วยจำนวน Cardinal Number
2. อ่านเลข ส่วน ด้วยจำนวน Ordinal Number
3. ถ้าเลขเศษเกิน 1 ให้เติม “s” ที่เลขส่วน
4. ให้ใช้ Hyphen คั่นระหว่างเลขทั้ง 2 จำนวน
เช่น    ½ = one-second = a half
5/7 = five-sevenths
9/11 = nine-elevenths

ส่วนเลขเศษส่วนจำนวนคละ ให้อ่านเลขจำนวนเดิมตามปกติของ Cardinal Number และเชื่อมด้วย “and” เช่น
8 5/7  = eight and five-sevenths
58 9/11 =  fifty-eight and nine-elevenths

ส่วนรูปทศนิยมนั้น อ่านเหมือนภาษาไทย เพียงแต่อ่าน “จุด” (.) = point

คุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ
(Possessive Adjective)
รูปคุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของพร้อมด้วยรูปบุรุษสรรพนาม (Personal Pronoun) ที่เกี่ยวข้อง

Personal Possessive
I my
thou thy
he his
she her
it its
we our
you your
they their
one one’s

รูปคุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของเปลี่ยนรูปเพื่อให้สัมพันธ์กับเพศและพจน์ของผู้ถือกรรมสิทธิ์ (possessor) แต่ไม่ต้องสัมพันธ์กับคนหรือสิ่งของที่ถูกถือกรรมสิทธิ์ (possessed)

The boy has lost his dog.        The boys have lost their dog.
The girl has lost her dog.        We have lost our dog.

รูปคุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของถูกใช้กันในภาษาอังกฤษในขณะที่ภาษาอื่นนิยมใช้ “the” แทน เช่น

I have had my hair cut.        She has changed her mind.
He hurt his foot.

แต่อย่างไรก็ดีมีสำนวนวลีบางอันใช้ “the” แทนคุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ เช่น
I have a cold in the head.        She took me by the hand.
She was shot in the leg.        The ball struck him in the back.
He got red in the face.

บางครั้งจะใช้ “own” กับคุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของด้วย เพื่อแสดงความหมายขัดแย้ง
I have bought my own book, I don’t need yours.
Do your own dirty work; don’t ask me to do it for you.

คำกำหนดนาม
(Determinatives)
1. Article (คำหน้านาม) : a, an, the
2. Adjectives of Quantity (คุณศัพท์บอกจำนวน) : one, two, three etc; all, some, several, any, much many, (a) few, (a) little, no, enough etc.
3. Distributive Adjectives (คุณศัพท์แจกแจง) : each, every, both, neither, either
4. Interrogative Adjective (คุณศัพท์สร้างคำถาม) : which, what whose
5. Demonstrative Adjective (คุณศัพท์ชี้เฉพาะ) : this, that, these, those
6. Possessive Adjective (คุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ) : my, your, his, her, its, their, our
7. Noun-Phrases in the Possessive case (วลีนามที่แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ) : John’s, the man’s, an old lady’s

The red book, this old chair, my new brown hair.

“much, many”

“much” ใช้สำหรับนามนับไม่ได้เท่านั้น เช่น
You haven’t much time if you want to catch that train.
He hasn’t very much money.

“many” ใช้สำหรับนามนับได้พหูพจน์เท่านั้น เช่น
You haven’t many minutes to spare if you want to catch that train.
How many cigarettes a day do you smoke?
มีอยู่โอกาสเดียวที่จะใช้”many” กับนามเอกพจน์นับได้คือใช้ในวลี “many a” เช่น
Many a ship has (= many ships have) been wrecked on those rocks.
Many a man would be glad of your job.
I’ve been there many a time.

“much และ many” ส่วนใหญ่จะใช้ในประโยคปฏิเสธและประโยคคำถาม เช่น
I haven’t much time.
Did you have much rain on your holidays?
Do you know many people in London?
There are not many mistakes in your exercise.

ในประโยคบอกเล่ามักจะใช้คำต่อไปนี้แทนเสมอ คือ a lot of, lots of, a large quantity of, plenty of, a great deal of, a great amount of, a great number of เช่น
He will have a lot of time to spare when he has finished the book he is working on.
She knows lots of people in London.
He has done a great deal of research on that subject.

หมายเหตุ  “a lot of, lots of, plenty of” ใช้กับนามนับได้รูปพหูพจน์  และใช้กับนามนับไม่ได้อีกด้วย ส่วน “a large quantity of, a good (great) deal of, a great amount of” ใช้กับนามนับไม่ได้เท่านั้น และ “a great (large) number of” ใช้กับนามนับได้พหูพจน์เท่านั้น

ขอให้สังเกตว่า “a lot of และ plenty of” ถ้าใช้กับนามนับไม่ได้จะใช้กิริยาเอกพจน์ แต่ถ้าใช้กับนามพหูพจน์ต้องใช้กิริยาพหูพจน์ด้วย เช่น
There is plenty of sugar in the sugar bowl.
There are plenty of chairs for everyone.

“much และ many” จะใช้ในโครงสร้างประโยคบอกเล่าในกรณีต่อไปนี้
1. ในโครงสร้างคำถามอ้อม (Indirect Questions) ที่นำด้วย “whether หรือ if” เช่น
I doubt whether there’ll be much time for seeing the sights of London; your train leaves at six o’clock.
I wonder if many people will be at the party.

2. เมื่อถูกนำหน้าด้วยคำ “so, too, as, how” เช่น
He has so much money and I have so little.
There are too many mistakes in your exercise.
He has drunk too much wine and ought not to drive his car home.
You can have as much wine (as many bottle of wine) as you want.
I know how much money (how many pounds) that ring cost.

3. เมื่อทำหน้าที่ขยายประธานของประโยค เช่น
Many Englishmen like to spend their spare time working in their gardens.
Much time would be saved if you planned your work properly.

4. เมื่อ “much” อยู่ตามลำพังโดยไม่มีคำนาม เช่น
Much depends on what answer the Prime Minister gives to that question.
I would give much to know what he is thinking now.
Much of what he says is true.

5. เมื่อ “much” ขยาย Abstract Noun ที่ประกอบด้วย Adjective เช่น
The book is the fruit of much patient research.

“few, little”
“few” (มีความหมายตรงข้ามกับ “many”) ใช้กับคำนามพหูพจน์ “little” (มีความหมายตรงข้ามกับ “much”) ใช้กับคำนามนับไม่ได้ และ “few และ little” มีความหมายในทางลบ (= ทางไม่ดี)
“few” มีความหมาย “ไม่มาก’’ (not many) เช่น
The few friends that he had are all dead.
Few people would agree with you.

“little” มีความหมาย “ไม่มาก” (not much) และเน้นความหมายในเรื่อง “ความขาดแคลน” เช่น
The little money that he was will hardly keep him in food.
The shipwrecked sailors had no food and little water.

“a few และ a little” มีความหมายในทางบวก (= ทางที่ดี) มีความหมาย “อย่างน้อยยังพอมีบ้างแม้ว่าจะไม่มากก็ตาม” (at last some, though not many (much)) เช่น
He has a few friends who call to see him quite frequently.
A few people would agree with you.
He has a little money and can live quite comfortably on it.
The ship wrecked sailors had a little water.

ตำแหน่งการวางคำคุณศัพท์
(The Position of Adjectives)
1. ในการที่ใช้คำคุณศัพท์ลักษณะ Attributive คือ วางไว้หน้าคำนามที่ขยาย ถ้ามีคุณศัพท์เพียงคำเดียว หรือ 2 คำก็ไม่มีปัญหาเท่าใด เช่น

a brown horse ; a hot day ; a tall young man
แต่ถ้าต้องการวางคุณศัพท์หลายๆ คำ และต่างชนิดกันขยายนามในลักษณะ Attributive จะต้องวางตามระเบียบในตารางดังนี้

determinatives Num Adj. Descriptive Adjectives Noun used as Adj. N
Ord.N. Card N. Quality or character size Age temperative shape colour Nationality
My first two good little new round grey French picture frames
These second three comfortable big modern square red Persain travelling rugs

แต่มีอยู่หลายกรณีที่คำคุณศัพท์ถูกวางไว้ข้างหลังคำนามที่ถูกขยาย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในภาษาเขียน ซึ่งมีกรณีดังต่อไปนี้
1.1 เมื่อประกอบด้วยวลีแสดงหน่วยวัด (Measurement) เช่น
a river two hundred miles long.    a man eighty-five years old;
a road fifty feet wide.            a building ten-storeys high;

1.2 เมื่อคำคุณศัพท์มากกว่า 1 คำ ขยายคำนาม เช่น
He is a writer both witty and wise.
He climbed the mountain by a route uncharted, steep and dangerous.
He had a face thin and worn, but eager and resolute.

1.3 เมื่อคำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้ขยายคำนามถูกตามด้วย Preposition Phrase เช่น
He is a man greedy for money.
Alfred was a King anxious for his people’s welfare.
All these are matters worthy of attention.

1.4 ในข้อความบางอัน (ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่มาจากภาษาฝรั่งเศส) เช่น
The Theatre Royal, the Poet Laureate, The heir apparent, from time immemorial, Court martial, all the people present, j. by all means possible, letters patent, proof positive, The Postmaster general, Knight errant

คำ “next และ last” อาจใช้ตามหลังคำนามได้ แม้ว่าตามปกติจะใช้วางไว้ข้างหน้าคำนามก็ตาม เช่น
last Friday หรือ Friday last next Monday หรือ Monday next

1.5 เมื่อใช้ขยาย Indefinite Pronoun (สรรพนามไม่ชี้เฉพาะ) เช่น
I’ll tell you something very important.
That’s nothing new.

He’ll provide everything necessary.
There is someone hurt, I think.

1.6 คุณศัพท์ที่น้าด้วย “the” อาจใช้ตามหลัง Proper Noun เช่น
Alfred The Great, William The Silent, Ivan The Terrible.

1.7 คุณศัพท์รูป Participle ที่มีความหมายหนักไปในทางกิริยา (Verb) ให้วางไว้หลังนาม เช่น
I have answered all the letter received.
The words mentioned below are .the answers.

ส่วนคุณศัพท์รูป Participle ที่มีความหมายหนักไปในทางคุณศัพท์ (Adjective) ให้วางไว้หน้าคำนาม เช่น
a broken bottle ; a painted table ; a crying child

2. “all และ both” สามารถใช้นำหน้าคำนาม คำคุณศัพท์ แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ คำคุณศัพท์หรือคำสรรพนามชี้เฉพาะ และคำนำหน้านามชี้เฉพาะได้ เช่น
All (both) his friends are gone.
All (both! these statements should be quite clear.
All (both) the boys have gone home.

แต่มันถูกใช้ตามหลังบุรุษสรรพนาม เช่น
When they saw the policeman they all (both) ran away.
We all (both) hope you will be successful.

3. “half และ double” วางไว้หน้าคำนามเมื่อมันถูกใช้ในความหมายบอกลักษณะ เช่น
He drank a half bottle of wine.
He drank half a bottle of wine.
He is my half-brother.
He gave half -a- crown for a half – crown book.
The stockings were sold at half price. (= ครึ่งหนึ่งของราคาเดิม)
He drank a double whisky.
I want a double room.

แต่ “half, double (และ twice)” ฝักจะตามด้วย “the” หรือคุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ (Possessive Adj.)
I bought the stockings at half the (that) price. (= ครึ่งหนึ่งของราคาที่คุณบอก)
That will cost half (double, twice) the money.
Half his time he does no work.
That would cost double (twice) his capital.

4. คุณศัพท์ที่ถูกขยายด้วย “rather หรือ quite” คำทั้งสองนี้สามารถวางไว้ข้างหน้าหรือข้างหลัง “a หรือ an” ได้โดยไม่ทำให้ความหมายเปลี่ยนแปลง
He played quite a good game.
That is rather a valuable picture.
He played a quite good game.
This is a rather valuable picture.
5. “enough” ปกติต้องวางไว้หน้าคำนามที่มันขยาย แต่อาจวางไว้ข้างหลังก็ได้ โดยความหมายไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง เช่น
We haven’t enough time.
We haven’t time enough.
และมันสามารถใช้กับทั้งนามเอกพจน์ และนามพหูพจน์
We have done enough work for today.
There are enough chairs to seat everybody.

การแสดงการเปรียบเทียบของคุณศัพท์
(Comparison of Adjectives)

(Positive Degree)
2. การเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่า (Comparative Degree)
3. การเปรียบเทียบขั้นสูงสุด (Superlative Degree)
เช่น

ขั้นธรรมดา ขั้นกว่า ขั้นสูงสุด
old older oldest
hot hotter hottest
careful More careful Most careful

“ความเท่ากัน” จะแสดงโดยรูปขั้นธรรมดา เช่น
Henry is as old as William.
It is just as hot today as it was yesterday.
Mary is as careful as Margaret.

“ความเหนือกว่า” จะแสดงโดยรูปขั้นกว่า เช่น
George is older than William.
It is hotter today than it was yesterday.
Elizabeth is more careful than Margaret.

“ความด้อยกว่า” จะแสดงโดยโครงสร้างง “less…..than”
Margaret is less careful than Elizabeth.
It is less hot today than it was yesterday.

แต่โครงสร้างเช่นนี้ไม่ค่อยมีใครนิยมใช้ มักจะนิยมใช้โครงสร้างเช่นนี้แทน
Margaret is not so (as) careful as Elizabeth.
It is not so (as) hot today as it was yesterday.
มักจะใช้โครงสร้าง as…..as ในประโยคบอกเล่าและใช้ so…….as ในประโยคปฏิเสธ แต่อย่างไรก็ดีบางท่านใช้ as….as ในทั้งประโยคบอกเล่าและปฏิเสธ “ความเหนือที่สุด” จะแสดงโดยรูป “ขั้นสูงสุด”
That was the happiest day of his life.
He is the oldest man in the village.

“ขั้นสูงสุด” จะแสดงความหมายในลักษณะเดียวกันกับ “ขั้นกว่า” แต่มองจากคนละแง่ เช่น
“Richard is the tallest of the three brothers and is the oldest boy in the school.”
มีความหมายเหมือนกับ
“Richard is taller than his two brothers and is older than any other boy in the school.”

“ขั้นธรรมดา” ก็คือ รูปปกติของคุณศัพท์เช่น clear, happy, good

การสร้างรูปการเปรียบเทียบคุณศัพท์
รูปขั้นกว่าสร้างด้วยวิธีต่อไปนี้
1.โดยการเติม-er ที่รูปขั้นธรรมดา เช่น
ขั้นธรรมดา     ขั้นกว่า
Clear        clearer
Sweet        sweeter
soft             softer

2. โดยการเติม “more” ไว้หน้ารูปขั้นธรรมดา เช่น
ขั้นธรรมดา        ขั้นกว่า
beautiful        more beautiful
interesting    more interesting
splendid        more splendid

รูปขั้นสูงสุดสร้างด้วยวิธีต่อไปนี้
1. โดยการเติม-est ที่รูปขั้นธรรมดา เช่น
ขั้นธรรมดา        ขั้นสูงสุด
Clear        clearest
Sweet        sweetest
Soft            softest

2. โดยการเติม “most”    ไว้หน้ารูปขั้นธรรมดา เช่น
ขั้นธรรมดา        ขั้นสูงสุด
beautiful        most beautiful
interesting    most interesting
splendid        most splendid

การสร้างรูปขั้นกว่า และขั้นสูงสุดด้วยวิธีการที่ 1 นั้น จะทำได้ก็ต่อเมื่อ
1. เป็นคำคุณศัพท์พยางค์เดียว (ยกเว้น right, wrong, real)
2. เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ 2 พยางค์ ซึ่งลงท้ายด้วยเสียงสระ หรือพยางค์เสียง –le  เช่น
pretty – prettier – prettiest    narrow – narrower – narrowest simple – simpler – simplest

หรือคำคุณศัพท์ 2 พยางค์ ที่มีเสียงเน้นหนักที่พยางค์หลัง เช่น polite – politer – politest

3. เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ 2 พยางค์ ที่มีเสียงเน้นหนักที่พยางค์หน้าบางคำ เช่น
quiet – quieter – quietest
handsome – handsomer – handsomest
pleasant – pleasanter – pleasantest
common – commoner – commonest

การสร้างรูปขั้นกว่าและขั้นสูงสุดด้วยวิธีการที่ 2 จะทำได้ก็ต่อเมื่อ
1. เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ 2 พยางค์บางคำที่มีเสียงเน้นหนักที่พยางค์หน้า เช่น
hopeful – more hopeful – most hopeful
fertile – more fertile – most fertile
pourous – more pourous – most pourous

2. เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ที่มากกว่า 2 พยางค์ขึ้นไป เช่น
beautiful – more beautiful – most beautiful
extravagant – more extravagant – most extravagant

วิธีการสร้างคำคุณศัพท์เปรียบเทียบแบบนี้ยังนำไปใช้กับคำคุณศัพท์ “afraid, alive asleep, awake, alone, afloat, ashamed, content, exempt, unable” ด้วย

คำคุณศัพท์ที่มีรูปเปรียบเทียบพิเศษ
Positive        Comparative        Superlative
good (well)        better                                     best
bad (ill)               worse                                      worst
little                     less (lesser)                          least
near                     nearer                                     nearest (next)
much (many)   more                                       most
far                        farther (further)                 farthest (furthest)
late                       later Hatter)                         latest (last)
old                       older (elder)                          oldest (eldest)
(out)                   outer (utter)                          outmost (utmost)
outermost (Uttermost)
(up)                     upper                                       uppermost
(in)                      inner                                         inmost   innermost
(fore)                 former                                     foremost, first

ควรสังเกตเกี่ยวกับเรื่องการสะกดคำคุณศัพท์รูปเปรียบเทียบด้วย ดังนี้
1. คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย -y และ -y ตามหลังพยัญชนะ ให้เปลี่ยน-y เป็น -i ก่อนแล้วจึงทำรูปขั้นกว่า หรือขั้นสูงสุด เช่น
happy – happier – happiest

แต่ถ้า -y ตามหลัง สระ ให้ทำรูปขั้นกว่าและขั้นสูงสุดได้เลย เช่น
grey – greyer – greyest

2. ถ้าคำคุณศัพท์นั้นเป็นคำพยางค์เดียว ใช้สระเสียงสั้นมีตัวสะกดตัวเดียว ให้เขียนตัวสะกดซ้ำอีก 1 ตัว ก่อนจะทำรูปขั้นกว่าหรือขั้นสูงสุด เช่น
big – bigger – biggest
thin    thinner – thinnest

แต่จงสังเกตเปรียบเทียบ
thick – thicker – thickest ไม่ต้องเขียน “k” ซ้ำ เพราคำนี้สะกดด้วย -ck เป็นตัวสะกดคู่

3. คำคุณศัพท์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย -e ให้ทำขั้นกว่าหรือขั้นสูงสุด โดยใช้ -e ตัวนั้นกระทบร่วมได้เลย เช่น
ripe – riper – ripest
able – abler – ablest
simple -simpler – simplest
fine – finer – finest

Than
เพื่อแสดง “ความเหนือกว่า” หรือ “ความด้อยกว่า” “than” จะถูกนำมาใช้กับคุณศัพท์รูปขั้นกว่า เช่น
George is taller than Henry., This car is less expensive than that one.

“than” ยังถูกนำไปใช้หลังคำ “rather และ sooner” ด้วย เช่น
He would rather (sooner) play than work.

“than” ยังถูกนำไปใช้หลังคำ “other” และ another” แต่ไม่ค่อยบ่อยนัก เช่น
The result was quite other than we had expected., This was quite another result than we expected.

โครงสร้างที่ใช้เป็นปกติ คือ The result was quite different from what we expected.
(“Different than” บางครั้งถูกใช้เหมือนกัน แต่ควรหลีกเลี่ยงเสีย)

รูปการเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่าโดยไม่ใช้ “than” อาจทำได้ในกรณีดังนี้
1. ใช้กับคำนาม หรือคำ “one” เช่น
I want a better job, Give me a larger piece of paper, Bring me a smaller one.

2. ในหน้าที่ Complement หรือขยาย Complement. เช่น
He is better now, It is warmer this morning.
The apples will get redder in the autumn, They have made the house bigger.
You must keep your house cleaner, He wants the work done better.

3. บางครั้งวางในตำแหน่ง Attributive (หน้านาม) แต่มิได้มีความหมายเปรียบเทียบโดยตรง เช่น
Look at the outer side, The former is good but the latter is bad.

4. หลังคำ senior, junior, superior, inferior, anterior, posterior แต่จะใช้ “to” แทน เช่น
This is sugerior to that, I am junior to him.

ข้อสังเกตเกี่ยวกับการใช้รูปเปรียบเทียบคำคุณศัพท์
1. คำ “major และ minor” ใช้ในลักษณะ Attributive จะไม่ใช้ในลักษณะ Predicative เลย เช่น
The major part of his work, This is a minor point.

2. รูป “good (well) bad (ill), little, much, far” ไม่ใช่คำที่มีความสัมพันธ์ในด้านการเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่า และขั้นสูงสุดจริงๆ นัก เป็นแต่กระทบทางด้านความหมาย แต่มาจากรากของคำที่ต่างกัน

“well” ปกติเป็น Adverb และใช้ในลักษณะเป็น Complement เสมอ แสดงเกี่ยวกับเรื่องสุขภาพ (health) เช่น
I am very well. He looks/feels/well.

“ill” เป็นคำ Adjective ในความหมาย to be/feel/look/fall ill; in ill health/news/luck (แต่คำ “bad” ดูจะใช้กันมากกว่า)

“to choose the lesser of two evils”
Cibber is one of the lesser poets of the eighteenth century.

5. “nearest” ใช้เกี่ยวกับ “ระยะทาง” “next” ใช้เกี่ยวกับ “อันดับที่” เช่น Where is the nearest Post-Office? The next station is Oxford Circus.

6. “farther” โดยทั่วไปใช้เกี่ยวกับ “ระยะทาง” เช่น
I cannot walk any farther, Manchester is farther from London than Oxford is.

“further” แม้ว่าจะใช้แทนคำ “farther” ได้ก็ตาม แต่มีความหมายพิเศษอีกความหมายหนึ่งคือ “เพิ่มเติม” (=additional) เช่น
I will give you further details later, I shall need further help with this.

“farthest และ furthest” สามารกใช้แทนกันได้

“older แระ oldest” สามารถนำไปใช้กับทั้งบุคคลหรือสิ่งของ เช่น  Henry is older than David, That is the oldest house in the city.

“elder และ eldest” ใช้กับบุคคลเท่านั้น และใช้กับสมาชิกในครอบครัวเดียวกันเท่านั้น และยิ่งกว่านั้นยังใช้ในลักษณะ Attri¬butive เท่านั้นด้วย เช่น
My elder brother is three years older than I, Henry is David’s elder brother, Mary is my eldest sister.

อย่างไรก็ดี “elders” ยังถูกใช้เป็นคำนามซึ่งมีความหมายว่า “บรรพบุรุษสมัยก่อน (ซึ่งชาญฉลาดกว่าพวกเรา) เช่น
You should respect your elders and betters.

มีวลีอยู่อันหนึ่ง คือ “an elder stateman ซึ่งหมายถึง “รัฐบุรุษซึ่งควรแก่การเคารพเนื่องด้วยวัยวุฒิและคุณวุฒิของเขา”

8. “less” ใช้กับคำนามนับไม่ได้ แต่ “fewer” ใช้กับคำนามที่นับได้ เช่น
He has spent less time on his work than he ought to have done, There are fewer boys than girls in my class.

9. “latter” หมายถึง “สิ่งที่สองในระหว่างสองสิ่ง” ซึ่งมีความหมายตรงกันข้ามกับคำ “former” เช่น
He studied French and German; The former language he speaks very well, but the latter one only imperfectly.

“latest” หมายความว่า “สิ่งล่าสุด” เช่น
Have you read John Scribber’s latest book?

“last” หมายความว่า “สิ่งสุดท้าย” เช่น
The Tempest was probably the last play that Shakespear  wrote.

“last” ยังหมายถึง “สิ่งที่แล้วมา” ด้วย เช่น
I think this recent book is better than his last one.
ซึ่งรวมทั้งคำเหล่านี้ last week/year/month/night

10. จงสังเกตว่า หน้ารูปคุณศัพท์ขั้นสูงสุด จะต้องใช้ “the” เสมอ เช่น This is the best advice I can give you.

11. “most + Adjective” อาจใช้ในความหมาย “มีคุณภาพที่ดีเยี่ยม” แต่มิได้มีความหมายแสดงการเปรียบเทียบโดยตรงเลย เช่น
What you have said is most interesting.

เมื่อโครงสร้างดังกล่าวถูกนำมาใช้ในลักษณะ Attributive จะใช้ Indefinite Article หรือไม่ก็ไม่ต้องใช้  Article เลย เช่น
She is a most beautiful girl., That was a most extraordinary thing to say.
He wrote me a most interesting letter., These are most delicious cakes.

แต่ถ้าใช้รูปคุณศัพท์ขั้นสูงสุดที่ไม่มี “most” ต้องใช้ “the” นำทันที เช่น He showed the greatest (the utmost) patience.

12. เมื่อคน 2 คน หรือของ 2 สิ่งถูกนำมาเปรียบเทียบกัน จะใช้รูปคุณศัพท์ขั้นกว่ากับคำ “the” เช่น
To choose the lesser of two evils, The greater part of the work,
The latter half of the twentieth century, She is the older and the more beautiful of the two sisters.
แต่
She is the oldest and the most beautiful of the three sisters.

The sooner this is done, the better.
The more the merrier.
The harder he tried, the less progress he seemed to make.
If you take a holiday now you will be all the better for it.
He told a lie about it, and that makes his fault all the worse.
Every day you are getting better and better.
The storm became more and more violent.
If he will help, us, so much the better.
If he doesn’t work, so much the worse for him.
He is rather the worse for drink.
You will be no worse for having had the experience.
You are none the worse for the experience; in fact, you are all the better.
I had better go now before it is too late.
He would rather play than work.
If the worst comes to the worst we can always walk home.
He made a living as best he could.

This is a more perfect specimen than that one. (เราหมายความว่าสิ่งนี้มีความใกล้ที่จะสมบูรณ์มากกว่าสิ่งนั้น)
My glass is fuller than yours, He says he has given me full details, but I want him to give me fuller particulars.
