By | December 24, 2014

Observance of the Five Precepts.

The observance of the Five Precepts is just about to begin. Are you interested to know about this?

Very much. What’s that man saying?

It’s in Pali; that means

“May I observe the Five Precepts together with the Triple Guidance.” He says this three times.

What are the Five Precepts?

Not killing, not stealing, not committing adultery, not telling falsehood, and not taking intoxicating things.

What are the Eight Precepts.

I’ve heard that some persons observe Eight Precepts in Wan Pra. What are those Eight Precepts?

They are Five Precepts with other three in addition.

What are they?

Not to take food beyond the fixed time.

What is the fixed time?

At noon. That means you take no food from noon till next morning.

What are the other two?

Not to have anything to do with dancing, singing, music, shows, using garlands, perfumes and things that tend to beautify and adorn. And the last one: not using high and luxurious seat and bed.

What is the great bliss?

A Thai friend of mine told me about auspicious days to do this and that. For instance to have hair cut on Monday is to have a great bliss. Is that a belief in your religion?

I don’t think it is Buddhist belief. We believe in the great bliss as preached by Buddha himself.

Could you tell me something about that?

I couldn’t remember all, but I’ll tell you so far as 1 know.

Yes, please do.

Not to associate with the unwise, to associate with the wise, to respect those worthy of respect. Each of these is the great bliss.

That’s a philosophy of life, isn’t it? And what else?

To honour, support and attend on parents, to look after the wife and children, to be well balanced in the presence of the eight manifestations of worldly changes. There are lots more. I wish I could remember them all.

That’s very interesting. Where can I study some more about this?

It’s in Mangala Sutta, which is recited* by Buddhist priests in many occasions.

That must be in Pali, I think.

That’s right, but I’ll find you the English translation of that.

Thank you so much.

มีคำว่า to chant = สวดมนต์ ซึ่งมีความหมายคล้ายๆ กับ to recite มากกว่า to pray.
