คำพูดตรงและคำพูดอ้อม (Direct and Indirect Speech)

By | September 27, 2014

Direct Speech (คำพูดตรง) หมายถึง คำพูดที่ผู้พูดพูดกับผู้ฟังในขณะเวลานั้นในภาษาเขียนจะต้องมีเครื่องหมายคำพูด (Quotation Mark) คลุมข้อความเสมอ เช่น
He said, “I am learning English”

แต่ Indirect Speech (คำพูดอ้อม) หมายถึงคำพูดที่ถูกนำไปพูดหรือเล่าต่อโดยอีกบุคคลหนึ่ง หรืออาจเรียกว่า “คำพูดที่ถูกนำไปรายงาน” (Reported Speech) เครื่องหมายคำพูด (Quotation Mark) จึงไม่ต้องใส่อีกต่อไป เช่น

Direct Speech : “I am learning English”
Indirect Speech: He said that he was learning English.

I. กฎการเปลี่ยน Tense

Direct Speech Indirect Speech
Present SimplePresent ContinuousPresent Perfect

Past Simple

Future Tense

Conditional

Past SimplePas ContinuousPast Perfect

Past Perfect

Future in the Past

Perfect Conditional

เช่นI write home every week.I am learning English.

I have learned English.

I have been playing football.

I wrote a letter to my friend.

I shall see her in London.

If I had my pen, I could write the answers.

He said that:He wrote home every week.He was learning English.

He had learned English.

He had been playing football.

He had written a letter to my friend.

He would see her in London.

If he had had his pen, he could have written the answers.

สรุปแล้วจะสังเกตว่า Tense ใน Direct Speech จะก้าวไป 1 ขั้น ในอดีต (Past) เสมอใน Indirect Speech แต่อย่างไรก็ดี ถ้ากิริยาใน Main Clause เป็น Present Tense หรือ Future Tense กิริยาใน Subordinate Clause (หรือ Direct Speech เดิม) จะไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลง Tense เลย เช่น
Direct Speech : “This work is too difficult.”
Indirect Speech:
He says
He is saying
(that) this work is too difficult.
He has said
He will say

นอกจากนี้ ถ้าข้อความใน Direct Speech เดิมเป็นเรื่องจริง (Facts) โดยทั่วไป ซึ่งไม่ขึ้นอยู่กับเวลาในขณะที่กล่าวข้อความนั้น หรือข้อความใน Direct Speech เป็นเรื่องของความเป็นปกติวิสัย (Habitual Actions) ทั้ง 2 กรณีนี้ต้องใช้กับ Present Tense เสมอ เช่น
Direct : “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” (Alexander Pope)
Indirect : Pope said that fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
Direct : The sun is 92 million miles away.”
Indirect : He said that the sun is 92 million miles away.
Direct : I get up at seven o’clock every morning.”
Indirect : He said that he gets up at seven o’clock every morning.
Direct : “My wife always drinks coffee for breakfast.”
Indirect : He said that his wife always drinks coffee for breakfast.

II. กฎการเปลี่ยนแปลงสรรพนาม
สรรพนาม (Pronouns) และรูปแบบแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ (Possessive Forms) จะเปลี่ยนแปลงตามกฎต่อไปนี้

Direct Indirect
I, me        my, minewe, us     our, ours

you          your, yours

he(she) his(her),  hers him(her) histhey, them           their, theirs

they, them           their, theirs

เช่นI bring my book every day; the book on the desk is mine.

We bring our book every day;

the books on the desk are ours.

He said that he brought his book every day; the book on the desk was his.She said that she brought her book every day; the book on the desk was hers.

they said that they brought

their books every day; the books on the desk were theirs.

อนึ่ง การเปลี่ยนสรรพนาม (Pronouns) และรูปแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ (Possessive Forms) อาจจะเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามสถานการณ์ต่างๆ ซึ่งจะต้องใช้สามัญสำนึก (Common Sense) ในการเปลี่ยนแปลงเพื่อให้เข้ากับสถานการณ์นั้นๆ ด้วย เช่น
Teacher:     “John, you must bring your book to the class.”
William     (นำข้อความนี้ไปเล่าให้อีกคนหนึ่งฟัง) : The teacher told John that he must bring his book to the class.
William (เตือน John ให้นึกถึงคำสั่งของครู) : The Teacher said that you must bring your book to the class.
John (นำข้อความนี้ไปเล่าให้เพื่อนฟัง) : The teacher said that I must bring my book to the class.

III. การเปลี่ยนแปลงอื่นๆ
คำต่างๆ ที่แสดงความหมาย “ใกล้ๆ” (Nearness) จะต้องเปลี่ยนเป็นคำที่แสดงความหมาย “ไกลออกไป” (Remoteness) เช่น
this                      เป็น        that
these                   เป็น        those
here                     เป็น        there
now                     เป็น        then
ago                       เป็น        before
today                  เป็น        that day
tomorrow         เป็น        the next day
yesterday         เป็น        the previous day; the day before

Direct Indirect
I saw the boy here in this room today. He said that he had seen the boy there, in that room that day.
I will see these boys now. He said he would see those boys then.
I spoke to them yesterday. He had spoken to them the day before.
I will teach the same lesson tomorrow that I taught two days ago. He said that he would teach the same lesson the next day that he had taught two days before.
George said, “This is the house where Shakespeare was born.”
George said, “This is the house where Shakespeare was born.” George said that that was the house where Shakespeare had been born.
I will do it here and now. He said he would do it there and then.

ข้อสังเกต ถ้า Main Clause ซึ่งคลุม Subordinate Clause (Direct Speech) ไม่ได้ถูกวางไว้หน้าประโยค กิริยาของ Main Clause จะต้อง วางไว้หน้าประธานเสมอ เช่น

1. George said, “This is the house where Shakespeare was born.” (Main Clause อยู่หน้าประโยค)

2. “This,” said George,” is the house where Shakespeare was born.” (Main Clause มิได้วางไว้หน้าประโยค)

3. “This is the house where Shakespeare was born,” said (V)George(S). (Main Clause

Direct : George said, “This is the house where Shakespeare was born.”
Indirect : George said (that) that was the house where Shakespeare had been born.
Direct : Mary said, “I don’t write every week.”
Indirect : Mary said (that) she didn’t write every week.

Indirect Speech รูปคำถาม (Indirect Questions)

Indirect Speech
2. กิริยาใน Main Clause จะเป็นคำ asked หรือคำที่มีความหมายเหมือนกันคือ enquired, wondered, wanted to know ตามลักษณะความหมายในประโยคนั้น)

Helping Verbs

Direct Question Indirect Question
Is Charles your brother? He asked me if (whether) Charles was my brother.
Has John many friends? He asked me if (whether) John had many friends.
Can Henry speak Spanish? He asked me if (whether) Henry could speak Spanish.
Will you help me? He asked me if (whether) I would help him.
Has Mary spent all the money? He asked (enquired) if (whether) Mary had spent all the money.
Do you know Mr. Brown? He asked if (whether) I knew Mr. Brown.
Does Pedro speak English? He asked if (whether) Pedro spoke English.
Did you see George at the football match? He asked if (whether) I have seen George at the football match.
Did they all do the exercise correctly? He asked (wondered) if (whether) they had all done the exercise correctly.

II. การเปลี่ยนแปลงเมื่อ Direct Question เป็นคำถามที่สร้างด้วย Question Words

Direct Question Indirect Question
What is her name? He asked me what her name was.
Where are you going? He asked me where I was going.
How will she get there? He wondered how she would get there.
Where does she live? He asked where she lived.
Why do they go to Paris so often? He asked me why they went to Paris so often.
What did she say? He asked what she had said.
Why did you come here? He asked me why I had gone there.

ในกรณีที่ Direct Speech เป็นการผสมด้วยประโยคต่างๆ มีทั้งประโยคบอกเล่าและประโยคคำถาม ให้ใช้ “and” เชื่อมข้อความทั้งสอง แล้วปฏิบัติตามกฎเกณฑ์ของแต่ละรูปประโยคดังกล่าวแล้ว เช่น
Direct : He said, “I have left my watch at home. Can you tell me the time?”
Indirect : He Said that he had left his watch at home and asked me if I could tell him the time.

Indirect Speech รูปคำสั่งและขอร้อง
(Indirect Commands and Requests)

Indirect Speech

3. เปลี่ยนโครงสร้างของประโยคำสั่งหรือขอร้องให้เป็นรูป Infinitive Phrase
4. ในกรณีที่ Direct Commands หรือ Requests เป็นรูปปฏิเสธ ใส่ “not” หน้า Infinitive Phrase เมื่อเป็น Indirect Com¬mands หรือ Requests

ตัวอย่าง

Direct Command or          Request Indirect Command or Request
Go away! He ordered him to go away.
Officer (to soldiers) : Fire! The officer commanded the soldiers to fire.
Run quickly! He told (ordered, asked, requested, commanded’) me (him, her, us, you, them) to run quickly.
Play the piano, please. He (she, etc.) asked me (him, her, etc.) to play the piano.
Do write to me as soon as you arrive. He (she, etc.) asked (begged, entreated, etc.) me (him, her, etc.)to write to him (her, etc.) as soon as I (she, etc.) arrived.
Don’t shut the door. He asked me (him, her, etc.) not to shut the door.
Don’t all answer at once. He told (ordered, etc.) them not to answer all at once.

ข้อสังเกตเกี่ยวกับการใช้ “if” หรือ “whether”
การใช้ “if” หรือ “whether” ใน Indirect Questions นั้นไม่ค่อยมีความหมายแตกต่างกันเท่าใดนัก แต่โดยทั่วๆ ไปแล้วมักจะนิยมใช้ “if” เมื่อไม่ต้องการเน้นความหมายของข้อความ เช่น
He asked me if (whether) I have seen the film. แต่ “whether” มักจะแสดงความหมาย “สงสัย” (doubt) หรือ “มีการให้เลือกในระหว่าง 2 สิ่ง” และในกรณีเช่นนี้มักจะตามด้วย “or” เช่น
I don’t know whether I should go away or stay here.
He asked me whether you would rather have tea or coffee for breakfast.

“whether” มักจะตามด้วย “or not” บ่อยๆ เช่น I don’t know whether it is raining or not และ “or not” อาจละไว้ก็ได้ เช่น
I am doubtful whether I can find time to see him (or not).
The question whether (or not) he should be invited is not for me to decide.
Ask him whether he’s coming on Friday (or not).

ในกรณีต่อไปนี้ใช้ “whether” เท่านั้น ห้ามใช้” if” แทนเด็ดขาด
1. เมื่อ Indirect Question นำหน้า Main Clause เช่น
Whether this is true or not, I cannot say.
2. เมื่อนำหน้า Infinitive Phrase เช่น
She hasn’t decided whether to sail or fly to America.
3. เมื่อใช้ในความหมาย “ขัดแย้ง” (Clause of Concession) เช่น Whether he works or not, I don’t think he will pass his examination.

ข้อสังเกตเกี่ยวกับการใช้ “say” และ “tell”
คำ 2 คำนี้มักจะก่อความยุ่งยากในการใช้เสมอ ซึ่งมีลักษณะการใช้ที่แตกต่างกันดังนี้

“say”
จะใช้ในกรณีต่อไปนี้
1. “say” มีความหมาย ”พูดหรือกล่าว” to utter) หรือ ”แสดงออกเป็นคำพูด” to express in words) เช่น
He always says what he means.
Say you are sorry for what you have done.
What did you say?
She says her prayers every night.
Who said that?

2. ใช้ใน Direct Speech และ Indirect Speech เช่น
He said, “the point is quite clear.”
He said that the point was quite clear.

3. จะไม่ใช้กรรมรอง (Indirect Object) ตามหลัง “say” เลย แต่ถ้าจำเป็นจะต้องมีกรรมรอง (Indirect Object) ในประโยค จะต้องใส่ “to” หน้ากรรมรองเสมอ เช่น
He said to me that the point was quite clear.

4. ใน Indirect Speech “say” ห้ามตามด้วย Infinitive Phrase เช่น
I told the boy to leave.
แต่ I said to the boy that he must leave.

“tell”
ใช้ในกรณีต่อไปนี้
1. ความหมายเดิมของ “tell” คือ ”นับ” (to count) เช่น
“And every shepherd tells his tale
Under the hawthorn in the doll.”
(“L’ Allegro” by Milton)

There were twenty of us, all told, who went on the excursion.
His hard work is beginning to tell. (= to count หรือมีผลแล้ว = to have an effect.)
That was a telling argument/a telling blow. (= one that counted)
A clock tells the time.

2. แต่ความหมายที่ใช้กันอยู่ในปัจจุบันคือ “เล่าเรื่อง’’ (= to narrate), “บรรยาย” (= to recount), เปิดเผย (= to reveal), ”อธิบาย” (to explain) สั่ง (to order) เช่น to tell a story; Tell me all you know;
I can’t tell you how sorry I am; to tell a secret;
I can’t tell how it was done; I told him to go away.

3. ใช้ใน Indirect Speech ในลักษณะประโยคบอกเล่า (Statements) และประโยคคำสั่ง (Commands) เช่น
Olaf told Pedro that he had enjoyed his stay in England.
The teacher told the boy to leave the room at once.

He told the boys to leave.

อนึ่ง จะเห็นความแตกต่างทางความหมายอย่างชัดเจนของ “say” และ “tell” ในประโยคต่อไปนี้
Please tell me your name. (= ผมไม่รู้ว่าคุณชื่ออะไร)
Please say your name. (=ผมอยากจะรู้ว่าคุณอ่านชื่อของคุณว่าอย่างไร)

การใช้ “Say” ในลักษณะสำนวน
I am glad to say that he is better.
I have nothing further to say on the matter.
It is said that he is worth half a million pounds.
He is said to be worth half a million pounds.
You must go there because I say so.
Suppose I were to lend him, say, five pounds.
Mr. Brown is out; I can’t say when he will be back.
He said to himself (= คิด = thought) there was something wrong.
What do you/What would you say to (= how would you like) a drink?
What I say (= my opinion = ตามความคิดของฉัน) is that women should be paid the same wages as men.
Yes, I think that goes without saying. (=It’s obvious that it doesn’t need to be stated = ใช่ มันชัดเจนอยู่แล้ว ไม่จำเป็นต้องกล่าวอะไรอีก)
I say! Look who’s coming.

หมายเหตุ ในภาษาอเมริกันใช้ “say!” เท่านั้น และมีความหมาย “แสดงความประหลาดใจ พึงพอใจ ประท้วง” และรวมทั้ง “เรียกร้องความสนใจ” ด้วย
The concert takes place in a fortnight’s time, that is to say on May 15th.

การใช้ “tell” ในลักษณะสำนวน
Don’t tell me it’s four o’clock already. (= surely it isn’t………)
The two children are so much alike that you can’t tell (= distinguish = แยกไม่ออก) one from the other; you can’t tell which is which.
It’s difficult to tell what this is made of.
He may pass his examination; you never can tell.
Nobody can tell what the consequence may be.
You can’t tell from his faces what he is thinking.
There’s no telling what may happen.
A gipsy told my fortune.
I tell you. I’m sick of the whole business.
George is very annoyed, let me tell you.

หมายเหตุ ตัวอย่างการใช้ “tell” 2 ประโยคสุดท้ายเป็นการแสดงความหมายเน้นอย่างยิ่ง

สรุปโครงสร้างของการใช้ “Say”
มีดังนี้
1. say + Object (หรือ + “so”) เช่น He said nothing. I say so.
2. say + “that” (Clause) เช่น He said that he was Mr. Brown.
3. say + to + (pro) noun + “that” (Clause) เช่น He said to me/the porter/that he is Mr. Brown.

สรุปโครงสร้างของการใช้ “tell”
มีดังนี้
1. Tell + Indirect Object + Direct Object เช่น He told me a story.
2. Tell + Direct Object + to + (pro) noun เช่น He told a story to me/his children.
3. Tell + (pro) noun + Infinitive Phrase เช่น I told him/the annoying person/to go away.
4. tell + (pro) noun + noun clause เช่น He told me/the porter/that he was Mr.Brown. Tell me what is worrying you.
